Your Internet domain name is your identity and in just the same way you
would protect your own personal identity, you should ensure that your domain
name is registered in such a way that gives you control over your name.
The record associated with your domain contains critical information including
the ownership and nameservers (web host company) relating to the name.
The following is an example of a domain name record:

What to Insist on when Registering Your Domain Name
| 1 |
Make sure you or your organization is listed as the Registrant |
| 2 |
Make sure you or an official within your organization is listed as the
Administrative Contact including the respective e-mail address |
| 3 |
The Technical Contact should list the name of your selected web host's Technical
Administrator, your organization's IT person, or your own name |
|
Also insist on being provided with the following:
|
| 4 |
The User Name or Account Name for your domain name record
|
| 5 |
The Password for your domain name record |
| 6 |
If the name is a Canadian top level name (.ca) then you must also have the CIRA
(Canadian Internet Registration Authority) Account Number and Password |
With the User Name and Password for your domain name record, you can make
changes to your domain name record by logging on to your registrar's web site
and going to the respective domain name management pages. McCann &
Cambrian provides domain name management at http://www.cambrianhosting.com/OpenSRS/manage.cgi
When critical information is modified on a .ca name, the changes must be
authorized on CIRA's web site. The Administrator for the domain name will
receive an e-mail directing her/him to go on line at CIRA to acknowledge and
authorize these changes.
For your convenience, you can go directly to CIRA at https://www.cira.ca/cira/detenteurs
without waiting for your e-mail notification and authorize the changes.
As the owner of a domain name, having all your information posted correctly,
passwords obtained and kept in a safe, secure place for your future use, will
ensure a smooth process and transformation in the event you wish to modify your
domain name, or change web host companies.
One final piece of advice is that the domain name owner should keep the
record up to-date, especially the Administrative E-Mail Contact! Keep
this e-mail address current on your record and consider using a name
aliased or associated with your domain name. This will provide further
personal control and security.
McCann & Cambrian often registers domain names for individuals and companies
enlisting us to develop and host web sites on their behalf. We attempt to
ensure that the client's appropriate and valid information is included with the
registration or renewal. For purposes of service, convenience and
expediency, we include the client's name as the Administrative Contact, but will
temporarily use our in-house e-mail address. We make it a policy to
provide all account and password details upon request and/or make changes to the
record as requested by the client.
