Straight Talk about the Internet
What is Web Hosting?
Web Hosting is a service provided by a company that
stores your web site files on a server connected to the
Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This service
includes hosting a complete domain, or simply a
directory. In the case where you are using your own
domain name the company is responsible for establishing
reference to this name executing a "domain name set-up".
There is generally a one-time cost associated with this
service, although some web host companies waive this fee
in the interest of
competing for your business. McCann & Cambrian does not
charge a set-up fee.
Is Web Hosting the same as ISP Service?
ISP refers to Internet Service Provider and as such is a
company that provides access to the Internet generally
via a dial-up account (utilizing telephone line) or via
cable. Having a Web Hosting company maintain your web
site does not provide you with Internet Access. In fact
should you be the one managing and updating your web
site, you will require the services of an ISP to access
your site. Clearly we are talking about apples and
oranges.
A Web Hosting company will usually offer one or more
e-mail address accounts aliased with your own domain
name.
